Grading System of Canada

Canada has a different grading system. When you apply to universities at Canada, you must have an idea of it. One of the most important things that needs to be studied in the Canadian Grading system is the GPA. GPA is the Grade point average.  This average is very important for attaining education in Canada as aAn individual with good GPA is more readily accepted in the Universities of Canada.

It is worth noting that GPA used in the universities here differs from other countries. This means, other countries have different numbering systems. While some have GPA out of 5.0, others have them out of 20.0. But, in Canada most of the universities have it out of 4.0 and some out of 9.0.

Basic Percentage Equivalency for 4.0 Grading

  • A   is 92% - 100% and denoted by a GPA of 4.33
  • A is 88% - 91% and denoted by a GPA of 4
  • A- is 85% - 87% and denoted by a GPA of 3.67
  • B is 82% - 84% and denoted by a GPA of 3.33
  • B is 78% - 81% and denoted by a GPA of 3
  • B- is 75% - 77% and denoted by a GPA of 2.67
  • C is 72% - 74% and denoted by a GPA of 2.33
  • C is 68% - 71% and denoted by a GPA of 2
  • C- is 65% - 67% and denoted by a GPA of 1.67
  • D is 55% - 64% and denoted by a GPA of 1
  • F is 0% - 54% and denoted by a GPA of 0

Basic Percentage Equivalency for 4.0 Grading

A is 90% - 100% and denoted by a GPA of 9.0
A is 80% - 89 % and denoted by a GPA of 8
B is 75% - 79% and denoted by a GPA of 7
B is 70% - 74% and denoted by a GPA of 6
B- is 65% - 69% and denoted by a GPA of 5
C is 60% - 64% and denoted by a GPA of 4
C is 55% - 59% and denoted by a GPA of 3
C- is 50% - 54% and denoted by a GPA of 2
D is 40% - 49% and denoted by a GPA of 1
F is 0% - 39% and denoted by a GPA of 0

There are also varied differences in the two lists. It is worthwhile to note that a grade “B” could be acquired by a student if he secures 78% in the 1st list. Unlike it the student has to secure just 70% as per list 2. It is also important to note that while applying for Canadian Universities, there is more vivid use of 4.0 GPA scale.

The credit hours are another thing that students should take into account as usually in Canada, a course duration is 4 months or 8 months. A course for 4 months mean 3 credit hours and 8 months mean 6 credit hours.

Procedure of Calculating the GPA

As stated above, GPA is calculated on the basis of grade and credit hours. The list below will help you understand it in a better way.

Economics  with a grade B (5) and 3 credit hours has a GPA value of 15
Psychology with a grade A (2) and 3 credit hours has a GPA value of 6
Geography with a grade C (2.33) and 6 credit hours has a GPA value of 13.98
English with a grade C (2) and 3 credit hours has a GPA value of 6
Mathematics with a grade B (6) and 6 credit hours has a GPA value of 36
Chemistry with a grade B- (2.67) and 3 credit hours has a GPA value of 8.01
Biology with a grade A (4) and 3 credit hours has a GPA value of 12
Statistics with a grade A (4) and 3 credit hours has a GPA value of 12

In the above table we find that the credit hours accumulate to 39 hours with a GPA value of 108.99. In order to calculate GPA one needs to divide the credit hours with GPA. In this case, it would be 3.633. A student in this case would rank “B” as per Canadian system.

Thus, as you are ready to apply in a university at Canada, keep these things in mind and see yourself in flying colors.
